Hickman, NM - A Listed New Mexico Ghost Town - Located within Wild Horse Ranch
Hickman, NM had its beginning in the 1920's and was housed in a log cabin, together with a general store for a ranching area north of Pie Town NM and south of Grants, NM. The mail was delivered weekly for the benefit of local ranches, sawmills, etc.
The Hickman post office ceased to exist in its original location in 1942 and was moved about 10 miles south to the general store and gas station belonging to Teat Lehew (the old rock structure on the Pie Town Rd on the way to Pie Town). Area ranchers receiving mail in 1946 would be John Lehew, Ellis McPhaul, Dr. Bumpass (a dentist for the whole world out here), Ab Bonine, Earl Bonine, Carl Kothman, B. C. Ringer, Sam McWhorter, Arnold Rainey, Jay McPhaul, Loy Cox and many others. In 1946 the old post office and store building still remained in pretty good condition. It was being used as feed storage by Kothman & Ringer Co. The only thing left are the old mailboxes in the general location of the log cabin.
The history of "The Day Tank" and how it came to be. Also, we have provided a very good "reading list" of books on area local history.
